Flatpack vs. Custom Cabinets — Which Is Right for You?
Updated 2026 — by C & R Cabinets, Brisbane
We offer both flatpack and fully-installed custom cabinetry — so we have no agenda in this comparison. The right choice depends on your budget, your space, and how much you want to be involved in the process.
The short answer: custom is better for most homeowners doing a quality renovation. Flatpack makes sense if you're budget-conscious, comfortable with DIY, or renovating an investment property. Our made-to-measure flatpack sits in between — same materials, no installation.

The Full Picture
Cost
Custom cabinetry is more expensive primarily because installation labour is included. Our flatpack option typically saves 20–35% on a like-for-like basis. Off-the-shelf flatpack from big box retailers can be cheaper still, but you're dealing with standard sizes, lower-grade materials, and the risk of a poor fit in non-standard spaces.
Quality and materials
Our flatpack uses the same 16–18mm moisture-resistant particleboard and the same hardware as our fully-installed product. The quality difference comes down to who assembles it — our tradespeople vs. you. Mass-market flatpack typically uses thinner boards, lighter hardware, and cam-lock joinery that won't last as long.
Fit and finish
Custom cabinetry is designed and built to your exact measurements — every millimetre is accounted for. Standard flatpack leaves filler panels and awkward gaps in non-standard spaces. Our made-to-measure flatpack is cut precisely to your dimensions, so it fits as well as fully custom cabinetry, even in unusual layouts.
Timeline
Flatpack generally has a shorter lead time because installation scheduling isn't required. Our flatpack is typically ready within 3–4 weeks from design approval. A fully installed custom job runs 7–9 weeks from deposit to completion — 4–5 weeks of manufacturing, plus installation and stone benchtop scheduling.
Who installs flatpack?
With our flatpack, that's up to you. Some customers do it themselves, others hire a handyman or carpenter. We provide clear assembly instructions and can recommend local trades if needed. Fully custom jobs are installed by our own team — the same people who built the cabinetry.
Warranty
Our fully installed cabinetry includes a warranty on our workmanship — if anything we installed develops a defect, we come back and fix it at no charge. Flatpack doesn't include an installation warranty, though the product itself is the same quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is flatpack cabinetry lower quality than custom?
Not necessarily — it depends on the supplier. Mass-market flatpack generally use thinner board and lower-grade hardware. Our flatpack option uses the same 16–18mm board and hardware as our fully-installed cabinetry, cut to your exact measurements. The difference is assembly: you put it together, we don't.
How much cheaper is flatpack compared to custom cabinetry?
Flatpack typically saves 20–35% compared to a fully-installed custom job, primarily because you're not paying for installation labour. However, you need to factor in your own time for assembly and the cost of any trades you hire for installation.
Can flatpack cabinets fit non-standard kitchens?
Off-the-shelf flatpack cannot — it comes in fixed sizes and leaves gaps in non-standard spaces. Our made-to-measure flatpack is cut to your exact dimensions, so it fits perfectly in any kitchen layout including angled walls, alcoves, and unusual ceiling heights.
Who should choose flatpack cabinetry?
Flatpack is a good choice for budget-conscious renovators who are comfortable with DIY assembly, standard or simple kitchen layouts, and projects where installation cost is a significant concern. It's also popular with investors renovating rental properties.
Who should choose fully custom cabinetry?
Custom is recommended for non-standard spaces, premium finishes (especially 2Pac), complex layouts, or when you want the manufacturer to handle everything from design through to installation and warranty. It's the right choice for most family homes undergoing a quality renovation.
